Manchester United played their final home game of the 2014/15 season on Sunday, for one star, it may have been the last we’ll ever see of him at The Theatre of Dreams. It’s been a rather below par season for United in the grand scheme of things, Louis van Gaal has achieved the absolute bare minimum that was asked of him. With over £150 million spent on transfers, the Dutchman failed to deliver any silverware to United. Top 4 might well be secure, and the team is without a doubt on the rise and ready to contend, but for one star, it seems he will not play any further part in the Van Gaal era.

Radamel Falcao started yesterday’s game against Arsenal, a rare occurrence during his time at United. With Rooney injured and Van Persie apparently ill, it was up to the Colombian to give it ‘one last go’. How many times have we heard that this season? It’s no secret all United fans are absolutely gutted with the outcome of Falcao, a signature deadline day move which shook the world of football, and added yet another huge name into the Premier League. But things just have not worked out for the 29-year-old. Even after only scoring 4 goals all season, I found myself asking the question on Sunday, ‘what if Falcao was to score a hat-trick today?’. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.

It’s been fairly obvious since the turn of the year that the Colombian would not be signed permanently by United. There was always a feeling throughout the season that Falcao would produce a glimpse of what we saw him do for Porto and Atletico Madrid, and leave the United executives with big question marks over completing the deal, but it just was not to be.

He clearly still possesses the ability he had for those sides, as it is often said, form is temporary, class is permanent. Falcao netted 41 goals in 51 games for Porto, and 52 goals in 68 for Atletico. But at 29 years old, and demanding wages of up to £300,000 a week and Monaco wanting £45+ million for the transfer, maybe regardless of his goal tally for United, the deal wouldn’t have gone through.

Falcao was substituted for Robin van Persie and waved what looked to be goodbye to Manchester United fans, he did add a touch of class to his departure though, as he looked to pat the United badge on his chest, a sign of respect? No matter what it meant, the wave was a clear indication that the Colombian will not be staying at Old Trafford.
It was a familiar moment for Manchester United, I myself felt a sense of Deja Vu which sent me all the way back to 2009 when Carlos Tevez acted in a similar way during his final appearance for United.

So it’s goodbye to one of the finest and deadliest strikers in the world. We’ve seen many greats pass through the doors at Old Trafford, very few of those had a similar record to Falcao’s. It’s a huge shame that the Colombian’s time at United has been a largely unsuccessful. Who knows what might have been, had the striker not endured a serious injury just months prior to his move. However,I’m sure every United fan will join me in wishing him all the best in the future.
