‘Not Even On Their Planet’ Outspoken Pundit Lambasts Manchester United Goalkeeper

BBC pundit Garth Crooks has criticised Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana in his latest Premier League team of the week column.

He compared Onana to United goalkeepers of the past, such as Edwin Van Der Sar, Peter Schmeichel and his predecessor, David De Gea. Following this, he went on to say that Onana is ‘not even on their planet’.

Crooks included Scott McTominay in his team of the week for his two goals in added time against Brentford – but he used this as fuel for his criticism of Onana, crediting McTominay for sparing the blushes of the Cameroonian international.

What did Garth Crooks say regarding Andre Onana in his column?

Writing on BBC Sport, Crooks penned: “Two goals scored and one disallowed by Scott McTominay turned what was rapidly turning into a nightmare for manager Erik ten Hag into something of a massive relief.

“It’s hard enough trying to win matches when your goalkeeper is in good form, but when he’s making errors almost on a weekly basis it makes life very difficult for all concerned.

“Especially when you’ve had Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar and David de Gea keeping goal for you during the past 20 years, it becomes very conspicuous when you have a goalkeeper who is not in their class.

“In fact, Andre Onana is not even on their planet. Since the arrival of the Manchester United ‘keeper, he’s been either smashing into centre-forwards, letting the ball slip through his fingers or, as was the case against Brentford, beaten by a shot a schoolboy would have been expected to save.”

Has Onana been a disappointment for Manchester United so far?

Sadly, there is no way to put it nicely – Onana has not met the lofty expectations that were set upon him since he joined United in the summer of 2023.

Not only has he been erratic in his decision making, his shot-stopping has also been below par. According to FBref, Onana has a save percentage of 68.4% in the Premier League so far – less than the likes of Matt Turner, Sam Johnstone and Bernd Leno.

We all know that there is a world class goalkeeper in Onana – he displayed his talents during the 2023 Champions League final – but it is safe to say that he is struggling to find his feet at Old Trafford.
