Going by last night’s game against AZ Alkmaar, it looks like it’s going to be a long, hard season for Manchester United. Injuries and a lack of depth means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting eleven for their game against Newcastle will have a distinctly unfamiliar look.

The Magpies are not in much better shape after their 5-0 hammering by Leicester City last weekend. Manager Steve Bruce has a job on his hands to turn the club’s fortunes around.

As mentioned, United’s injury problems show no sign of abating anytime soon. Jesse Lingard limped off with a hamstring injury against AZ and will be unavailable for Sunday’s match.

Solskjaer has also confirmed that Paul Pogba is unavailable as he tries to recover from a persistent ankle problem. Anthony Martial (thigh), Luke Shaw (hamstring), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (illness), Eric Bailly (knee) and Phil Jones (knock) are all out of contention.

Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle will face a late fitness test with the 28-year-old having finally recovered from a calf injury. Jonjo Shelvey (hamstring) and Jetro Willems (knee) are both back in training.

Florian Lejeune (knee) and Matt Ritchie (ankle) are unavailable while Isaac Hayden will miss the game due to suspension after being sent off against Leicester.
