While the 0-0 draw with Chelsea will not go down in history as one of Manchester United’s most flamboyant attacking displays, it will go down in history as the game where free-agent signing Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani made his Old Trafford debut. While the game lacked the chances and attacking threat of recent games between the old rivals it still provided the opportunity for Cavani to show what he’s about.

With Marcus Rashford starting upfront as the central striker after Anthony Martial’s 3 game PL ban, Cavani was a very interested spectator at Old Trafford yesterday as he possibly imagined finishing the 1 clear first half chance United got which Rashford could not finish. With the Uruguayan only joining on deadline day we knew it would be a little time before he made his debut.

But the former PSG man did not need long to show what he will provide for United as almost instantly the new Red-Devils number 7 appeared on the edge of the 6 yard box to flick a rasping cross from Bruno Fernandes and for a moment it looked in but ultimately hit the side netting.

While the new United man would have loved to score on his debut, in the 33 minutes he played once he came on for Daniel James, he showed fans that he still has plenty in the tank and offers the potential of being just as influential as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was in his spell at United after also signing as a free agent. Cavani showed his guile and experience making intelligent runs, looking for the ball and seems likely to work well with Fernandes, Pogba et al.

Cavani can score goals as his unreal return of 138 goals in 200 games in his spell at PSG showed and we are backing the striker to reward Ole with a bunch of goals this season in return for the faith the United boss has shown by signing him.
