New Man United skipper says Lukaku faces a ‘massive step-up’ this season

Manchester United have yet again been splashing the cash in the summer transfer window, landing Victor Lindelof from Benfica and securing a monstrous deal to bring Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku to Old Trafford from fellow Premier League side Everton.

The 23-year-old forward arrives to fill a huge gap in Manchester United’s attack that emerged following the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic earlier this month and Lukaku has huge boots to fill, especially as he’ll be tested in the Champions League this season.

Lukaku’s European experience to date is minimal and the striker has often been criticised for his lack of consistency during the season, with his array of goals usually coming in purple patches and the Belgian having poor games in other stages of the campaign.

That’s something Lukaku will need to improve on next season as Manchester United chase Premier League glory and new Red Devils skipper Michael Carrick, who took the armband following Wayne Rooney’s return to Everton, has stated Lukaku faces a ‘massive step-up’.

Quoted by The Guardian, the veteran England international said:

“The jump is massive. I found that myself coming from Tottenham. It’s a massive jump. You can’t really explain to people until they’ve gone through it. I’m sure he’ll find the same. But having Premier League experience is a massive bonus. He’ll know how things work week to week. It’s just about dealing with the pressure.”

“It’s early days. It’s one week’s training and 45 minutes against Galaxy so you can’t come to any conclusions. We know what he is all about, there are no surprises. We all know exactly what he brings and that is why he is here. He is not going to change his game because he has come here. He does what he does best and obviously he’s been brought here to score goals. I am pretty certain he will do that this season.”

Having scored 85 Premier League goals since 2012, a number only Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero can better, Lukaku certainly has the attributes to become a hit at Manchester United and fans will hope he’ll hit the ground running when Premier League football returns next month.
