Neville Wants United Ace To Be Dropped For Liverpool Clash

TV pundit and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes Romelu Lukaku should not start against Liverpool at the weekend.

The Belgian striker started and scored against Fulham in the 4-1 win on Saturday, ending his goal drought at Old Trafford which had extended back to March.

However, Neville feels Lukaku is still lacking in confidence and wants United to go with pace in attack instead:

“No, I’d go with the mobility. I’d go with the ones that have been playing. I think the Lukaku who played at the World Cup for Belgium could make this team easily, but the Lukaku who has played for Manchester United this season is lacking confidence.”

The United legend is backing the front three of Rashford, Martial and Lingard to face the Reds on Sunday evening. The trio’s pace will no doubt give Jurgen Klopp’s side a thing or two to think about on the counter-attack.

Whether Jose Mourinho will go with that approach, it is not certain. The Portuguese boss has tended to go for more conservative tactics in away games against the other ‘big six.’

In last season’s goalless stalemate at Anfield, Ashley Young was fielded as a right winger with Antonio Valencia at fullback. It will be interesting to see if he goes with a more expansive setup as Neville advocates.
