Neville Hits Back At Questions Over Whether United Stars Can Play Together

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville doesn’t think Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes will have any issues playing in the same midfield.

The Sky Sports pundit took to Twitter yesterday to respond to doubts over whether the two playmakers can play together, and he used Manchester City pair David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne as examples of how it could work:

“I don’t understand the sentiment of “how do Pogba and Fernandes“ fit together. They won’t be in a 2 sitting!”

“With more fluid systems today than 20 years ago it should be simple. We’ve just watched De Bruyne and David Silva play together for 3 years in a MDF 3.”

Neville is absolutely correct to say there is no reason why Pogba and Fernandes can’t play together, but it is important that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a flexible enough system in order for both of them to thrive.

Pogba has generally performed better in a deeper role for his country, while Fernandes played in a similar position for Sporting, so the United boss will have to decide which one plays in a more advanced role.

Going by the nine games he has played for United so far, Fernandes is the most likely to be given that responsibility.
