Neville Believes Southampton Performance Shows United Are On The “Right Track”

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes there were positives to be taken from the 1-1 draw against Southampton on Saturday.

The Red Devils struggled to break down ten men when Saints centre-back Kevin Danso was sent off with 20 minutes to go, but Neville thinks his former team are not far off from getting things right:

“(Man United) just don’t have that clinical element to see (the game) off. I think Man United are on the right track… The first thing Man United have to do is have a group of people in the dressing room who want to be there.”

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is trying to play the long game. He needs support from up-above. He needs really strong leadership over two to three seasons to be able to have the four or five transfer windows he needs.”

Like Neville, Paul Scholes has also called for patience from fans regarding the club’s transition period. Both United legends seem to think it will take at least two seasons to turn things around.

Solskjaer is certainly encouraging younger players to come through, but the cutthroat nature of English football still means he needs results to ensure he keeps his position.

Five points from four games isn’t the greatest return, and supporters will be expecting United to put in some better performances after the international break. They face Leicester next up at home on Saturday week.
