Neville backs Manchester United to win Premier League this season

Manchester United are set for their second campaign under the guidance of Jose Mourinho and fans will be excited about the prospect of another season under the Portuguese boss, who has a history of enjoying league success in his second season in charge of clubs.

Mourinho enjoyed instant glory last season by emerging victorious in the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League but each of those trophies will stand as insignificant on the grand scheme of things, as Manchester United eye a return to the summit of European football.

Champions League glory is probably a step too far for Mourinho’s side this season, although the luck of the draw will prove to be decisive, but winning the Premier League for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement is definitely an achievable ambition.

The Red Devils won’t find things easy though as there is a wealth of clubs eyeing league glory this season, including close-rivals Manchester City, defending champions Chelsea, last year’s runners-up Tottenham Hotspur, FA Cup champions Arsenal and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola’s Citizens side are likely to be Manchester United’s closest competitors this season, as the other aforementioned sides have various concerns heading into the new campaign, but former Red Devils defender Phil Neville is backing Mourinho’s side to pip their cross-city rivals to league glory.

Quoted by The Daily Express, Neville revealed his predictions for the Premier League’s top-four for the forthcoming campaign- and he’s expecting big things from Manchester United.

“Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal. The two Manchester clubs will fight it out for the league, but Jose Mourinho’s track record of winning titles in his second season and the buys they’ve made this summer mean I am going for United.”

Mourinho has enjoyed success in two spells with Chelsea, a stint with Inter Milan and Real Madrid, winning league titles with each of those clubs- including the Premier League in the second season of his second spell with the Blues.

Of course, things didn’t end well for Mourinho at Chelsea as he was dismissed the following season, in a campaign where the West London giants eventually finished tenth, but his exit from Stamford Bridge has been of benefit to Manchester United.

Last season can definitely go down as a transitional campaign for Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford and the additions of Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic this summer bolster his side significantly, resulting in a squad that should shine under the two-time Champions League winner’s guidance.
