Slovenia head coach Bostjan Cesar claims Man Utd striker Benjamin Sesko is facing a “difficult period” on the sidelines after suffering a recurrence of a shin injury.
The 23-year-old was not able to link up with his national team, having also missed the 1-1 draw against Fulham due to the issue, and speaking about the situation, Cesar said:
“This isn’t an easy time for Benjamin. He is going through a difficult period in his career, as we know he hasn’t suffered many injuries in the past. It is an atypical injury that requires time to heal. The most important thing now is for Sesko to surround himself with people he trusts and believes in, and for everyone around him to remain positive. Because that is what he needs. He needs time, he needs good rehabilitation, and Slovenia needs him too, once he is fully healthy.
“It is a process that not only Benjamin goes through, but all footballers. Naturally, there was no such criticism when he was fit and scoring goals. He’s aware of this. He is a professional. I believe he doesn’t read these things or let them weigh on his mind. He is a young player, and things are moving incredibly fast in his life. But he has already made the mental shift. His mind will have to make such transitions in the future as well.”
Sesko’s injury history
The forward was initially forced off at halftime against Liverpool with the same shin problem back in May. He missed the last three matches of the 2025/26 season as a result.
Sesko underwent rehabilitation over the summer months, and he was unable to take any part in pre-season as he continued his recovery.
However, the Slovenian international did make the bench for the opening day fixture against Hull City. He played 6 games and scored 2 goals before suffering a relapse in the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton last week. Speaking about the injury, Man Utd boss Michael Carrick said:
“We’re not sure with Ben yet. He felt a bit of pain after the game, so we’re assessing him. At the moment, he definitely wasn’t ready for [Fulham], so I haven’t really got any more news to give you at this point. We’ll have to see what that brings.”
When could he make his comeback for Man Utd?
Sesko will have to undergo scans, and the medical team will also need to determine the right course of treatment before any estimate on a return date can be given.
Cesar described the issue as “chronic”, which may suggest the doctors will have to take a different approach to how they dealt with the issue over the summer.
