Mourinho’s overhaul is starting in earnest this summer and it can’t happen quick enough

Manchester United manger Jose Mourinho is coming to the end of his first season in charge at Old Trafford and, whilst it may not have been the rampaging year many will have expected, it has been a solid start.

Much of the talk coming into his tenure in the red half of Manchester was surrounding the squad he inherited from Louis van Gaal and how the Portuguese would overhaul what was left behind. His plans rolled into action quickly with the additions of Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and, most notably, Paul Pogba.

However, from the season which has unfolded it is clear that there is still plenty to do at Old Trafford before they can return to the heights reached under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mourinho himself admitted this week that he felt the squad he currently has is ‘very far’ from being able to challenge at the top once again, and it’s hard to disagree.

There are, of course, some outstanding talents in that side. In addition to the four marquee additions last summer, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial are all top players, even though the latter may not have shown as much this term.

However, some of the signings in the years after Sir Alex were decidedly ‘un-Manchester United.’

This is something which Mourinho is now going to have to address once again this summer. Reports this week are suggesting that the former Chelsea manager is ready to sell on-loan winger Adnan Januzaj who, despite being tipped for the very top when he emerged under Sir Alex, has failed to realise his potential.

There are players who, aside from the odd performance, are no longer up to the standard of a Premier League or Champions League challenging side, the likes of Ashley Young and Phil Jones spring to mind, whilst other prospects such as Guillermo Varela are unlikely to make a mark under Mourinho.

Sales such as these may not seem hugely decisive, but they still serve the purpose of reminding the rest of the squad what could happen should they not meet the desired levels week-in, week-out under the former Inter Milan boss.

Mourinho began the overhaul last summer in attracting some of the biggest names in football to Manchester once again, and must continue to be ruthless this time around if he stands any chance of having a run at success at home and on the continent next season.
