Mourinho wants Godin to re-enforce defence this summer

Jose Mourinho will turn to Diego Godin this summer to help re-enforce his defence ahead of the new Premier League season, according to reports.

Godin, 32, has been a stalwart at the back for Atletico Madrid in recent years, helping them five major honours since his move to the club in 2010 – including the La Liga title in 2013/14 and the Europa League last season.

His good form has continued on the international stage this summer with Uruguay, the defender starring as his country’s waltzed into the World Cup’s last-16 having won all three of their group games without conceding a goal.

And according to the daily paper AS , Jose Mourinho has now identified the Atletico Madrid centre-back as the man he wants to strengthen his defensive options.

AS also claim Godin could be available for as little as £18m this summer, with the veteran defender having only one-year left on his current deal at the Wanda Metropoliano.

Talks are understood to be ongoing over a new contract for the 32-year-old to stay with Atletico, however no agreement has been reached thus far.

Juventus are also understood to be chasing Godin as a replacement for the outward bound Mehdi Benatia, who has been linked with a move to Ligue 1 side Marseille.
