Mourinho Unsure On League Title

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has conceded that his side might not be in contention for the Premier League title. The Red’s sit 14 points behind leaders Chelsea (with a game in hand against Everton), but have made their worst start to a season in almost 30 years.

United have picked up their performances and are beginning to get wins on the board, but their Premier League form still looks very harsh to to the eye, and the game against Everton will be seen as a must-win if they are to even slightly look like contenders.

Despite the constant expectation of winning at Manchester United, Mourinho has kept his ambitions relatively low after the team’s start to the season – stating that although his long term goals are to win league titles, this year might not be possible.

He said: “I think the destination for us is to be champions.”

“Maybe not this year, maybe we cannot do it. I don’t know. In football anything is possible but maybe we don’t do it. There’s a gap between us and the top of the table but the destination is for us to be champion. I don’t know when, maybe next year, maybe this year, maybe in two years’ time.”

Mourinho also bemoaned statistics that show his United side are ‘worse off’ than another team led by a different manager several years earlier. The Portuguese said: “There is always another statistic For how long Man United didn’t play so well at home? For how long Man United doesn’t play so well in four consecutive matches at home? There are different statistics and you go in the direction you want to go.”

“Sometimes you win matches and you don’t know the destination, you don’t know how it goes to hand, you just win, you don’t know how the future is going to be. Now in our group now we know the destination, we know how it goes to hand.”

Mourinho is sure to get things going his way sooner or later, United are still in a good position in their other competitions and it might be wise to aim for a top 4 finish rather than winning the title.
