Mourinho states he wants to enjoy lengthy spell at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho’s first season at Manchester United can go down as a success, as his side won the Community Shield, the League Cup and the Europa League- with victory in the latter securing the Red Devils a spot in the Champions League this season.

A sixth-placed finish in the Premier League though, which saw the Red Devils finish a massive 24 points behind champions Chelsea, was a major disappointment and Mourinho will be keen on improving that standing this season, having spent heavily to bring Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku to the club.

Historically, Mourinho has a short life-span at clubs with his stints at Porto, Chelsea (twice), Inter Milan and Real Madrid never lasting longer than three years. However, the Portuguese boss intends for that to change at Manchester United as he targets a long legacy at the club.

Quoted by The Daily Mail, the 54-year-old manager said:

‘I am ready for this. I am ready for the next 15 years, I would say. Here? Yes, why not?’

‘I have to admit that it is very difficult because of the pressure around our jobs, everybody putting pressure on managers and things that people say – that we have to win. But in reality only one can win and every year it is getting more difficult.’

‘What I try to do in the club is show that my work goes further than the football results, that it goes to areas that people don’t think of as a manager’s job. In my vision, my job is much more than what I do on the pitch and the results that my team gets at the weekend.’

‘What I try to do in modern football nowadays is to try to deserve to stay in the club, because in this moment, it is about success. You have success, you stay in the club. You don’t have success, you don’t stay.’

‘You have huge success in one year, the next year you don’t have success and you are out. It happened to me at Chelsea, it happened to Ranieri at Leicester, it will happen to many others. Nowadays, people look much more on the short-term.’

Whilst it’s highly unlikely Mourinho would emulate the great Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, his desire to stay at the club for a long period is music to the ears of Manchester United fans- who have seen their side struggle to find stability in the post-Ferguson era.

The length of Mourinho’s stint at Manchester United will all depend on success though and anything less than a charge for the Premier League title this season will be considered a massive disappointment, especially considering the money they’ve spent.
