Mourinho insists Carrick and Herrera will get chances

Jose Mourinho says Michael Carrick will have to be patient in order to get game time this season, sighting the talent within depth at the club as the reason many stars have lacked minutes on the pitch so far this season.

Carrick has played a big part in every season he has been at United, but after being names captain this summer he has not made a single appearance for the club so far this season – in some cases not even making the bench.

There are several players among the United squad who will have hoped for more playing time this season, the likes of Ander Herrera and Chris Smalling have also seen their minutes slashed as the new season has started up.

However, Mourinho says that this is just part and parcel of being at a big club, insisting that stars with limited game time will see their chance come soon.

“(Sergio) Romero played the Europa League final, which was the game of the season for us and he is not playing,” said Mourinho.

“Ander Herrera was player of the season and is not starting matches.”

“That’s life in big clubs.”

United are expected to field a number of fringe players against Burton Albion in the League Cup, including 36-year-old Carrick who Mourinho describes as an important player.

“We gave him a contract because we think he is a good player, an important player, he is just in a team where I think in this moment (Nemanja) Matic and (Marouane) Fellaini are in the best form that I have ever seen them.”

“I never saw Matic or Fellaini play so well, so he is in a team with these two guys playing absolutely phenomenal, so for Carrick and Ander it’s just patience because that time will arrive and they will be important players for us for sure.”

“That’s a team, that’s a squad, we can only play with 11 guys.”
