Mourinho drops hint to suggest superstar could return to Man United

Manchester United have been productive in the transfer market thus far, signing Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku, but Jose Mourinho is continuing to eye further recruits as he seeks a major improvement upon a side that finished sixth in the Premier League last term.

The Red Devils finished last season a whopping 24 points behind champions Chelsea and have big boots to fill in their side this summer, with Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic having both left Old Trafford over the course of the past month.

Rooney sealed a return to boyhood club Everton as part of the move bringing Lukaku to Manchester, ending 13 years at Old Trafford, whilst Ibrahimovic was released upon the expiration of his one-year contract following injury.

However, there has been speculation suggesting that Manchester United could bring the Swedish striker back to the Premier League when he’s returned from injury and Mourinho confirmed that’s a possibility, with the BBC quoting him as saying:

“If the decision is to stay and wait until December – he can’t be back until them – why not wait? We are speaking and changing ideas.”

“We wanted to let him make a decision – space and time to think and decide. He didn’t want to hide behind an amazing injury. That would be easy.”

“He was not happy in the way he finished the season. He made the challenge for himself to want to keep playing at highest level.”

“We opened the door for him to recover with our people and be one of us. It is [executive vice-chairman] Mr Woodward and Zlatan’s agent who will deal with it.”

Ibrahimovic made an impression at Manchester United last season by scoring 28 times across 46 games in all competitions but his injury late in the campaign forced him to miss the finale of the Red Devils’ campaign, including the Europa League final win over Ajax.

Lukaku’s arrival means Ibrahimovic wouldn’t necessarily be the star-man at Manchester United if he was to return later this year but the club need depth within their squad to compete in the domestic competitions and in the Champions League, especially as Lukaku has no experience in the latter.

Whether a deal can be struck remains to be seen but Manchester United fans will be pleased that Mourinho is keeping his options open, ahead of another crucial campaign for the Red Devils.
