Mourinho blames boots for Lukaku’s lack of goals

United boss Jose Mourinho will have felt a huge sense of relief after his side managed to overcome a scary period during their game with Watford on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils took a 3-0 first half lead thanks to goals from Ashley Young and Anthony Martial, and Romelu Lukaku could have put the game well and truly to bed when he was presented with a glorious opportunity for a fourth.

But the Belgian seemed hesitant to strike the ball first time, perhaps showing a lack of confidence on his part.

After the game, Mourinho joked that Lukaku’s boots were to blame for the incident, saying the striker needed a new deal with a football boot company to get back to his best goalscoring form.

“I think he needs a big contract with big boots because at the moment he doesn’t have a sponsor,” Mourinho said.

“He’s playing with black boots, I think he needs a brand to give him the right boots and pay him the right money so he goes back to scoring.

“He finished the deal and now he’s waiting for a new deal.”

Mourinho then went on to speak about his admiration for the 24-year-old, saying that there is no pressure on him to score goals whilst he is working as hard as he is.

“But jokes apart he works amazingly well for the team. I would never blame a player like him for an easy chance that he missed.

“With me he knows that he doesn’t have that pressure, he’s a great professional, great colleague, I couldn’t be happier with him.”
