Merson Thinks Sanchez Is A “Bit Lost” At Manchester United

Paul Merson believes that Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez’s struggles at the club are down to the style of play that manager Jose Mourinho employs.

In contrast to his time with Arsenal, where he was part of a team that prioritised attacking play ahead of defending, the Sky Sports pundit believes that at Old Trafford the Chilean is having to adapt to getting fewer chances in front of goal:

‘He looks a bit lost at the moment, but that could be confidence. I can’t believe it’s nearly six months without a goal. For someone who is supposed to be that good, that’s a long time as a forward.”

‘He’s struggling at Manchester United. They don’t make as many chances as Arsenal. Arsenal are all out attack but that’s not the way they play at Old Trafford. When Arsenal play, they just go gung-ho, that’s not the case at Manchester United.”

With a full pre-season under his belt and after not being on international duty at the World Cup, it was expected that Sanchez would hit the ground running this campaign.

However, the 29-year-old has yet to score in five Premier League appearances this season and was substituted on the hour mark in the 1-1 draw against Wolves at the weekend.

Since arriving from the Gunners in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan last January, Sanchez has hit the back of the net just three times. His last goal came in the 2-1 win against Spurs in the FA Cup semi-final back in April.
