Merson Cites Key Factor That Will Aid United’s Attempts To Sign Sancho For BELOW £100m

Paul Merson says Jadon Sancho could well be sold for below £100m this summer, in light of the ongoing global health crisis which is impacting football.

The Sky Sports pundit is predicting a downturn in transfer fees over the coming months, with clubs having to furlough staff and defer wages of key players. He believes Borussia Dortmund will have to lower their demands, giving United the chance of signing him on the cheap:

“All the talk about Jadon Sancho commanding a £100m-plus transfer fee has been blown out of the water if you ask me. Borussia Dortmund are said to be demanding in excess of that figure for one of Europe’s hottest young talents, but they can forget it.”

“There’s no way that’s going to be happening. It’s gone – over and out. Top clubs can’t be putting staff on furlough and then start forking out that kind of money the minute the transfer window opens.”

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already suggested that the Red Devils may well exploit other clubs who are suffering financially to get signings in for lower amounts.

However, if, as Merson predicts, Sancho’s asking price does decrease, it could allow other teams into the race for the 20-year-old. Chelsea and Liverpool have been mentioned as other possible destinations for the England international, and it will be interesting to see if they enter the bidding for the player if his price tag drops.
