Memphis On The Move After Making Minimal Impact Under Mourinho?

When then United manager Louis van Gaal moved quickly at the end of the 2014-15 season to sign PSV Eindhoven starlet Memphis Depay, the Dutch manager had to act expeditiously to complete the acquisition. In light of the massive interest in the wideman from other top European clubs as he was coming off a 25 goal season which is undeniably impressive for a winger, United had to work hard to sign Memphis ahead of the big European interest. When Memphis joined it looked like he was made for United especially after he scored 2 cracking goals against Club Brugge to lead United to victory and qualification to the Champions League proper.

Unfortunately this was sadly the high-point of the Dutch winger’s season at United as he struggled for consistency and ultimately found himself behind Ashley Young in the pecking order. Louis van Gaal lost confidence in Memphis which naturally hurt the winger’s confidence and made it hard to select him for van Gaal as the player was just not cutting it in a United shirt. Memphis finished the 2015-16 season with a mere 7 goals for club and country in the 51 games he appeared in across all competitions.

Unfortunately even though Memphis had a clean slate and a fresh start under new boss Jose Mourinho, the winger has made minimal contributions for United this season. Jose has only seen fit to use Memphis as a sub where he has only got limited minutes towards the ends of games so it is hard for the player but clearly he has not done enough to force his way into the mind of Mourinho. The off-field exploits of Memphis have not done much to endear himself to Mourinho as he has the reputation as a bit a partier. The Dutch winger has only managed to play very small parts of 8 games so far this campaign and he has not scored any goals and has only a yellow card to show for his efforts.

Naturally, United are considering all options for Memphis and it would appear that Turkish Giants Galatasaray are willing to take the player on. Galatasaray has apparently tabled a bid of around £15million which would leave United taking a £10million hit on the winger after only 16 months at Old Trafford. The powers that be at OT seem to be willing to hold out for a more reasonable offer or would do a loan deal until the end of the year where United would have the right to bring back the player at the end of the season when hopefully he has got plenty of game time for Galatasaray and managed to realise some of his vast potential and get back to close to the peak of his powers.

There is no doubt that Memphis is a potential world-class player he just needs to focus and knuckle down and just because he arrived at Old Trafford to great fanfare he still needs to work his socks off to establish himnself as nothing is handed to you on a plate. What happens this year will have a great impact on the rest of his career and hopefully Memphis has the maturity to recognize this and commits to doing whatever it takes to reach his goals at United.
