McIlroy Not Sure On Van Gaal

Pro golfer Rory McIlroy, an avid Manchester United fan, admits he isn’t so sure on Louis van Gaal’s ‘philosophy’ and doesn’t think the Dutchman is the right man for the job at United.

Van Gaal has spent over £250m in his reign as United boss which has only spanned for a year. However, so far this season the Red Devil’s still look like a team in huge transition – picking up just 7pts out of a possible 12, leaving them 5pts adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City.

McIlroy didn’t hold back when speaking to Sky Sports at the Deutsche Bank Championship. He expressed his belief in Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring ability, despite the Englishman’s Premier League drought. But Rory also criticised Van Gaal’s leadership qualities.

“I think the new signings will be good in time, but I’m not convinced LVG is the right man to lead us,” he said during a Sky Sports interview.

“I don’t know, it’s a hard one. Everyone is dropping points, and it looks like City might run away with the league.

“At least we’re back in Europe, so that’s a good thing.”

United’s goal drought has seen them score just 3 goals in the Premier League this season, one of which being an own goal. Wayne Rooney has been highly criticised for his lack of goals, but McIlroy is confident the striker will be back to his best in time.

“Rooney did well for England at the weekend, so hopefully that will give him confidence when he returns to domestic football,” he added.

“A top-four finish is obviously likely, and hopefully we’ll challenge for the title, but we’ll see.”
