McClaren: Van Gaal Right Man For United

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren faced Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United last weekend and halted the Red Devil’s to a 0-0 draw. McClaren was a United coach under Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign, winning all there is to win at United. Now, the Newcastle boss insists that United have chosen the right man to lead them back to the top of English football.

“Anybody coming in would find it difficult because Manchester United is an institution and it was run by Sir Alex.” said McClaren.

“But I think Louis van Gaal is the best man – if anyone can turn it around, he can.”

“I looked from the outside and felt it needed someone of his stature and character to come in here. I’ve seen him do it in Holland and Germany.”

“He started at Bayern Munich and the first six months were not very good but then he built and won the league.”

“It will be totally different because there’s a new philosophy here. That takes time to bed in and grow.”

However, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has criticised Van Gaal, saying the performance against Newcastle was far from fantastic.

“He [Van Gaal] said ‘fantastic’ a few times but I don’t think there was anything fantastic about it at all.”

“At home to Newcastle you are expected to win the game. Their goalkeeper has had one save to make, and that is not fantastic.”

“With the money the manager has been given, he needs to produce and needs to do it this season.”
