Martial wants to leave United, confirms agent

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial wants to leave Old Trafford this summer in order to play more regular football, according to his agent.

Philippe Lamboley says that although United don’t want the player to leave and instead want to extend Martial’s current contract, the Frenchman has his mind made up and thinks it is ‘time to move on’.

Martial joined Manchester United in a shock deadline day deal back in 2015, with the initial fee said to be around £36m with add-ons that could raise the price to as much as £60m.

The teenager set the Premier League alight, scoring on his debut against Liverpool before going on to finish as the club’s top scorer for the season. Now aged 22, Martial has seen his chances limited at the club, not least due to the January arrival of Alexis Sanchez.

Now it seems enough is enough for the Frenchman, who was left out of France’s squad for the World Cup this summer.

“We have not reached an agreement for several months,” said Martial’s agent to French news outlet RMC Sport.

“After thinking about all the factors and possibilities, Anthony wants to leave Manchester United.

“There are lots of factors, and right now it’s too early to talk about them.

“I think that when United, the most powerful club in the world, do not find an agreement after eight months of negotiations then they do not really want to keep such an important player in their squad. That’s why this decision has come – it’s a well-thought-out decision.

“Everyone will have their opinion but I think he needs to resume his career. The time has come.”

It serves as a huge blow for United as Martial is rated as not only a fan favourite, but also a genuinely exciting player who will almost certainly become one of the best players in the world.
