Martial Could Fall Victim At United Under Mourinho

Everyone at Manchester United loves Anthony Martial. The totally unknown 19-year-old moved to Old Trafford on deadline day in the summer 2015 window for around £36m. It was one of the craziest yet exciting signings the club had ever made – and with the debut season the Frenchman had, it seemed things were only going to get better.

Despite being largely put out on the wing by Van Gaal, Martial managed to net 17 goals and end the season as United’s top scorer. Then came the Euro’s, a time that France and Martial himself will hope to forget. Since then, Martial hasn’t been the same whatsoever, and as a result was dropped from Mourinho’s XI vs Manchester City on Saturday. He did make a cameo appearance in the game, but it still didn’t give United fans what they wanted to see.

Now, former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has said that Mourinho’s arrival at United is almost certainly going to further push Martial into bad form, saying the forward could fall victim.

“Already he seems out of sorts. He is out of the team and could be the latest wide man to fall victim to Jose Mourinho’s management,” Cascarino wrote in The Times.

“The defeat by City exemplified Mourinho’s issue with wingers. He wants them to be runners, thinking as much — if not more — about tracking their full back as they do about attacking. If they have a decent crossing ability then that helps.”

“His future may depend on whether the fans side with their star or their manager. Marcus Rashford is another young player with a problem because he will not start ahead of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the only other position that he could play would be out wide. That would be a complete waste. All fans like seeing young players, particularly locals lads, doing well. Failing to get the most out of Rashford and Martial could become a real issue for Mourinho.”
