Manchester United captain Harry Maguire had a night to forget as the Red Devils dropped two points against relegation-threatened Burnley.
The England international was penalised for interfering in the buildup to Raphael Varane’s disallowed goal during the first half, but it was his abject defending for Burnley’s equaliser that led to most of the criticism.
Maguire was pulled out of position and then turned inside and out by Wout Weghorst, whose pass led to Jay Rodriguez levelling the game. Supporters have been giving the centre-back both barrels on Twitter:
Like he plays now, for sure. Mans dragging us down. Really hope lindelof is fit for the next match

A few mistakes in a season you can cope with, seems to be every game, he gets out runned, looks clumsy, other teams now target him which is costing us weekly, doesn’t seem to boys the team as a captain, needs to be dropped he’s had enough time to turn it around, but they won’t..

I think the piece that upset me the most with Maguire today is that he didn’t take ownership of his mistake that led to the goal. A captain should be the first to admit when they made a mistake

It should be done with immediate effect. He wasn’t born as captain for Manchester United and if he can’t play as a normal player for the team..then he should go to another football club. It’s time for change!

Take the financial hit, accept we got this one wrong and sell him. We will never win a league with him in a back 2. Their goal aside, the amount of times he played crap passes to people then immediately was telling the player trying to deal with that pass not to panic was scary

When Harry was dropped in favour of Lindelof for a couple of matches, it did him a world of good. He came back fully focused.
Yet he’s back to his old habits of just terrible decision-making.
Drop him again and make sure he learns what it takes to perform EVERY WEEK.

We are building a formidable squad, and Maguire doesn’t fit in…no pace, poor decisions, always keeps opposition on, poor recovery; check Varane and Bailey’s recovery abilities…that’s what good defender means.

Maguire is one of the reasons why this team is not progressing. Imagine gifting an expensive poor player the captain band. What a time in Manchester United. I can’t believe this.#MaguireOut

It has to be said that Maguire is not helping himself at the moment. As captain, the 28-year-old does get criticised more than is warranted sometimes but his performance yesterday evening essentially cost his team the victory.
Whether he will be dropped in favour of Victor Lindelof when United take on Southampton this weekend, we shall have to wait and see.
