Manchester United vs Watford: Predicted XI

Manchester United face a trip to Watford on Saturday hoping to bounce back from the international break in good fashion. Many of the Reds’ players were involved in their international duties, with several coming back injured.

It leaves manager Louis van Gaal with a big selection headache, especially over who will start up front.

During an interview with MUTV on Friday, the Dutchman confirmed Anthony Martial, Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney, Marouane Fellaini, Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw are all casualties, and will not feature against Watford.

Van Gaal said: “I think that everybody knows Michael Carrick and Anthony Martial are injured, but also injured is Marouane Fellaini. That’s a surprise because I thought he was recovered after the international break, but still he is injured. And that’s a big blow because Rooney is ill, so we have a big problem, I think.”

Star striker Anthony Martial left Wembley Stadium on crutches in midweek after a heavy challenge by England’s Dele Alli, many feared the worst about the extent of his injury, however Van Gaal hopes the Frenchman will be available again for United’s Champions League tie with PSV Eindhoven next Wednesday.

“It’s not so heavy as everybody has written in the media, but he cannot play against Watford,” said Van Gaal.

“Maybe PSV for Martial but it’s not certain, and I think Rooney shall also play then because illness is not something of many days. And Valencia, of course, has been operated on before the international break already, then Shaw, so we have five injured players, and that’s a lot.”

So who starts up front on Saturday? It won’t be James Wilson, who Van Gaal confirmed has no match rhythm.

Here’s how we think United will line up:

Darmian – Jones – Smalling – Rojo

Schweinsteiger – Schneiderlin

Mata – Herrera – Lingard
