Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer has weighed up his opinion after Manchester United played their first game under new manager Ruben Amorim.
The Portuguese manager replaced Ruud Van Nistelrooy who was in interim charge following on from Erik Ten Hag’s sacking.
His first game was a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town where the Red Devils started brilliantly with a goal from Marcus Rashford after two minutes before they conceded an equaliser and failed to score a winning goal.
Former Premier League striker Shearer said that they failed to take advantage against Ipswich and that there is a lot of work to do under new boss Amorim.
He said on the Rest is Football Podcast: “They failed to kick on, it was very much like what we’ve seen and you’ve got to give great credit I think to Ipswich, there was no panic from them, more than deserved to get their goal before half time.
“A draw was probably a fair result, but he [Amorim] has got a really big job on his hands and its going to take a lot of time and there’s no way you can judge him after one game. He’s going to need the rest of this season to try and implement his style, they need new players in there, they need improving in forward positions, but its a start.
“For a start he’s got an ageing midfield, it would be almost impossible for those two to do what he wants in terms of the press and the high energy. It’s been that poor for such a long time now, nobody could go in there and click their fingers and get it right instantly, its going to take time.”
Amorim’s next five games for Manchester United
The new Manchester United boss will hope to see an improvement from his players in the next five games as he has a quick turnaround turning his attention to Europe as United face Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League for Amorim‘s first Old Trafford match.
The Red Devils then play an equally winnable game against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday also at Old Trafford. Amorim will be keen to win both games as his United side should.
They then have a tough test against Arsenal on Wednesday 4 December in a game that Amorim can use to judge his side against a true Premier League title contender.
Manchester United then host Nottingham Forest who recently lost 3-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates in a tough game at Old Trafford.
Before, in five games’ time, another winnable Europa League match which comes against Czech side Viktoria Plzen.
