Manchester United are set to sign Patrick Dorgu for a fee that could rise to €35m (£29m), according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils have finalised an agreement with the wingback’s club Lecce after lengthy negotiations took place over the past few days.
Dorgu did have other suitors, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City and Napoli but United were the team most determined to secure the Danish international’s signature.
Ruben Amorim’s side had several bids rejected for the player before finally reaching a compromise with Lecce.
What do fans need to know about Dorgu?
The 20-year-old is a product of FC Nordsjaelland’s academy. Some notable names have come through the ranks of the Danish club over the years, including Brighton’s Simon Adingra and Brentford’s Mikkel Damsgaard.
However, Dorgu left to join Lecce on loan in the summer of 2022. He didn’t play for the first team but the youngster did enough during his time in Italy to convince them to sign him on a permanent basis.
Dorgu became part of the senior setup at the start of last season, making his debut against Como in the Coppa Italia. He has since gone on to make 57 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A side.
Where will he play for United?
Most have assumed that Dorgu will be used as a left wingback. However, it must be pointed out that he has spent a fair amount of this season playing on the right wing.
It means the Dane could potentially be deployed in one of four positions in Amorim’s 3-4-3 setup. He could play in either wingback position or further up the pitch, playing either side of the striker.
Considering the club’s most pressing need is to replace Diogo Dalot, who is currently covering on the left, it seems like the most plausible role for him to take up.
