Ligue One Star Gives Green Light To Become Amorim’s ‘First Major Signing’ At United But There’s A Problem

Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes wants to join Manchester United, according to reports.

The Portuguese international has worked under Ruben Amorim before at Sporting Lisbon and the i Paper claim that he is “keen” to reunite with his former manager.

Contract talks between Mendes and PSG have reportedly broken down and, with the defender’s current deal set to expire in less than 18 months, the Ligue One champions may be forced into selling him.

The i Paper report that the 22-year-old could well become Amorim’s “first major signing” as United head coach but there are some major obstacles to overcome.

United can’t afford to sign anyone in January

Due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR), the Red Devils have been backed into a corner financially. Any signings this month will have to be funded by sales.

The club are keen to offload high-wage earners such as Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford but buyers will need to be found.

That means recruiting Mendes may have to wait until later in January when United may be in a better position to spend the necessary cash.

Wingbacks will be Amorim’s top priority

The main issue that the new manager has had since being appointed in November is the lack of specialist wingbacks in the first-team squad who can fit into his 3-4-3 system.

Neither Noussair Mazraoui nor Diogo Dalot are really cut out for the position so the only solution will be to bring in new players.

Mendes is one of the options that has been looked at, along with Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez. You can read more about who we think United could buy this month in our article here.
