Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes is keen on making the move to Manchester United, according to reports in France.
Foot Mercato claim that the Portuguese international is “very interested in the idea of joining Ruben Amorim” who gave him his first-team debut at Sporting Lisbon.
Mendes is currently in a contract dispute with PSG, and it is increasingly likely that he will leave the Parc des Prince in the near future.
The 22-year-old has less than 18 months left on the contract that he signed when he first arrived from Sporting in the summer of 2022.
“No chance” of a January transfer
While Mendes is said to be open to making the switch to Old Trafford, the likelihood of the move happening this month is thought to be pretty low.
Foot Mercato report that there is “no chance” of PSG selling him during the January transfer window, with any approach from United only expected in the summer.
Considering Amorim is desperate to strengthen his options at wingback as soon as possible, that will come as a disappointment to the United head coach.
How much would United need to pay for Mendes?
In addition to PSG’s reluctance to sell, another factor that makes a deal unlikely in January is the cost of buying the Portuguese defender.
It has been claimed that Mendes’s asking price is €60m (£50m) and the Red Devils are not in a position to spend that much due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules. A significant sale (or two) may be needed to fund the move.
With that being the case, the left-back’s arrival will probably have to wait until the end of the season, although his interest in linking up with Amorim again is very encouraging from a United perspective.
