Manchester United are likely to “increase their bid” for Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, according to HITC Football.
The Red Devils have offered €30m (£25m) and another €5m (£4.2m) in add-ons for the Dutchman, who has been capped 45 times by his country.
However, Erik ten Hag’s side could now raise that amount to €40m (£34m) in order to try and get the deal over the line for de Ligt.
There is some scepticism over whether such a proposal would be accepted, as Bayern has so far remained steadfast in demanding €50m (£42m) plus add-ons.
HITC claim that valuation has upset de Ligt, who was reportedly promised by his club that they would accept a fee below that figure.
Which club will blink first?
Transfer negotiations are often about brinkmanship with both teams looking to get the best possible deal, but there is still a sizeable gap between United and Bayern.
The Red Devils could well decide to walk away if they feel no progress has been made but you do feel a compromise can still be reached.
After all, Bayern have already lined up de Ligt’s replacement, with the Bundesliga side reportedly having a deal in place to buy Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen.
United could sign another Bayern player
In addition to de Ligt, Erik ten Hag’s side are believed to have had talks about signing one of his teammates: Noussair Mazraoui.
The Morrocan international is also another former Ajax player who has worked under ten Hag before but he would be substantially cheaper than de Ligt, with Bayern only holding out for around €20m (£17m).
If things go in the Red Devils’ favour, there is a good chance that they could secure a double transfer over the coming days and weeks.
