Former Manchester United Striker Teddy Sheringham has said that his former team should swoop in for Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi.
Guehi was one of the stand-out performers for England at Euro 2024 which has led to a lot of interest in the 24-year-old defender. Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United are all keen on landing Guehi’s signature.
Crystal Palace have set a £65 million price tag for him however as they are keen on holding onto the defender for at least another season.
Teddy Sheringham believes that Guehi would end United’s search for a centre-back replacement for Raphael Varane who left as a free agent this summer.
Speaking to Online Poker, the former England international said: “After the way Marc Guehi played for England during the Euros, I’d quite happily see Manchester United go for him.
“I think he could be a star for the club over the next few years. He’s already got a lot of leadership qualities at a young age through his captaincy of Crystal Palace and he just seems assured in everything he does.
“That’s what United need at the back – leadership and composure.”
Marc Guehi’s most likely destination
Despite Teddy Sheringham’s enthusiasm about Marc Guehi moving to Manchester United, it seems like Old Trafford isn’t the most likely destination for the 24-year-old.
According to TeamTalk, Liverpool are very confident in landing Guehi. They have already held talks with Crystal Palace over what a possible deal could look like and manager Arne Slot is confident that they can get it across the line.
Which other centre-backs has Manchester United been linked with?
United have been keen on several centre-backs this summer as they look to replace Raphael Varane. On top of Marc Guehi, they have also made a pursuit of Lille FC star Leny Yoro.
According to the Guardian, the 18-year-old is close to moving to Old Trafford after a £52 million bid was accepted by Lille.
Furthermore, Erik Ten Hag’s side has also shown significant interest in Bayern Munich defender Matthis De Ligt.
