Manchester United are one of two clubs competing to sign Brighton forward Joao Pedro, according to UOL Esporte.

The Brazilian news outlet claims that the Red Devils are “interested” in the 23-year-old but they are not currently favourites to secure his services.

Liverpool have already begun “initial talks” to buy Pedro, although it is believed that the Reds are still in the early stages of negotiations.

Brighton are notoriously difficult to deal with when it comes to transfers and it has led Arne Slot’s side to start discussions now ahead of the next transfer window.

Will United get involved?

UOL report that the Red Devils first looked at Pedro when Dan Ashworth and Erik ten Hag were still at the club and it remains to be seen whether they will maintain their interest now that both men have departed Old Trafford.

Head coach Ruben Amorim is said to be keen on recruiting a new striker but other names, such as Lille’s Jonathan David and Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres have been mentioned more recently, along with Porto’s Samu Aghehowa.

Arsenal have been credited with an interest in the Brazilian international as well, with it being suggested that the Gunners are lining up a bid of between €55m (£45.3m)  and €65m (£53.6m).

However, based on sources in Brazil, it seems like it will be a straight fight between Liverpool and United, with the former having apparently made the first move for the player.

Pedro has been in decent form this season, with 4 goals and 3 assists in 9 appearances. With the striker also still in his early 20s, he could still improve in the future, so it is not surprising that he is in high demand.
