Manchester United remain in contact with the agent of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano said that the 22-year-old is still an “active” target, even though they have had two bids rejected for the player:
“Let’s see if Manchester United will return – for sure, they keep their contacts active with the agent of the player. The contacts between Manchester United and the agent of Branthwaite are absolutely active, I can guarantee that.”
It is believed that the Red Devils’ last offer for Branthwaite was worth £45m upfront, with another £5m add-ons, but that remains well short of his asking price.
How much do Everton want for the centre-back?
Depending on what report you read, the Toffees are said to be holding out for anything between £70m and £80m. That is substantially more than Erik ten Hag’s side are willing to pay at the moment.
However, there are suggestions that the club are lining up a third bid for Branthwaite. At the time of writing, that proposal hasn’t been formally lodged but it is definitely something to look out for over the next week or so.
Are United pursuing alternatives to Branthwaite?
The Everton player is being targeted as the Red Devils believe he can provide competition for Lisandro Martinez. Both players are left-footed, unlike Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro who the club are also keen on purchasing.
Neither de Ligt nor Yoro would be deemed direct alternatives for Branthwaite. Nonetheless, United are determined to sign both defenders.
De Ligt has already agreed personal terms but a compromise has yet to be found on a transfer fee. His club Bayern Munich are believed to be looking for around €50m (£42m).
In contrast, United have already had a bid accepted for Yoro, but the teenager is currently favouring a move to Real Madrid.
