Everton are growing increasingly confident that Manchester United transfer target Jarrad Branthwaite will sign a new contract, ending speculation about a move to Old Trafford, according to reports.
The 22-year-old was the subject of several bids from the Red Devils last summer but TBRFootball claim the Toffees now feel they have a good chance of keeping the player beyond the end of his current deal which expires in 2027.
Branthwaite does have admirers other than United, including Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, although the Manchester club are the team that have come closest to securing his signature.
Even though they did not have an offer accepted by Everton for the centre-back last year, it is believed they had agreed personal terms with the player.
Everton’s sky-high price tag
Despite United clearly being keen on recruiting Branthwaite, the biggest obstacle to a transfer going ahead has always been the England international’s valuation.
TBRFootball report that Everton remain steadfast in holding out for a fee between £70m and £80m, and their stance would be strengthened even further if the defender signs a contract extension.
Are United considering alternatives?
Branthwaite is by no means the only centre-half who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. At the end of last week, it was reported that the Red Devils had registered their interest in RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba.
However, the Frenchman’s release clause is set at €90m (£75m) so he would not necessarily be a cheaper option if United make an approach for him at the end of the season.
Some fans may argue that recruiting a new centre-back should not be a priority for the summer anyway, with the club struggling to score goals at the other end of the pitch.
