Manchester United are keen on signing Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
The journalist claims that the Red Devils are “seriously interested” in the England Under 21 international, along with Bayern Munich.
Dortmund are expected to sanction Gittens’ sale if they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.
With Nuri Sahin’s side currently sitting in 10th place, 5 points adrift of 4th spot, that is a distinct possibility.
Gittens has followed the same career path as a former Manchester United player
The winger spent some time in Manchester City’s academy before making the switch to Germany in the summer of 2020.
Inevitably, there have been comparisons made to Jadon Sancho who took the same route to senior football. United fans will, of course, be hoping for a different outcome if Gittens does make the move to Old Trafford in the future.
United are not the only Premier League club interested in the winger
Speaking on his YouTube channel earlier this month, journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that both Liverpool and Chelsea have scouted Gittens.
Based on his form this season, it is not a surprise that the 20-year-old is in such high demand. He has scored 11 goals and provided 5 assists in 26 appearances, having found the back of the net in 5 of his last 8 league matches.
The biggest stumbling block for any team interested in signing Gittens will be his asking price. Dortmund are said to be demanding €100m (£84.5m), which is not a figure you can see United paying, considering their current financial situation.
Of course, with Dortmund hoping to snap up Marcus Rashford on loan, there could be a conversation to be had about Gittens. A swap seems unlikely but a deal of some sort may be discussed.
