Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has “approved” a move to sign Sporting Lisbon wingback Geovany Quenda, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Despite Amorim’s interest in the 17-year-old, though, Romano also told GiveMeSport that a transfer is not close to being finalised:
“[Geovany] Quenda is on the list for sure, he’s been on the list for weeks and months. This remains the case. Nothing to say in terms of deal done now but he’s a player approved directly by Amorim.”
There have been rumours that Quenda has already agreed personal terms with the Red Devils but Romano seems to be claiming that things are not that advanced.
Quenda could be sold for £50m
Despite having a €100m (£83m) release clause in his contract, reports in Portugal have suggested that Sporting would sanction the teenager’s sale if they receive an offer in the region of €60m (£50m).
That is still a sizeable sum to pay for someone like Quenda who has very limited experience at the highest level, but the fact that his club are open to negotiation on a fee means there is a chance that United can strike a deal for the player if they do choose to step up their interest.
United have PSR concerns
Amorim has already spoken out publicly to say that the club will need to sell players before they buy in the next transfer window so fans should be wary of reports claiming that the club will spend big this summer.
Even so, adding another wingback to the squad will be one of the club’s top priorities. They have recruited Patrick Dorgu for the left flank but Quenda would be a suitable addition for the other wing. It is a transfer story to keep an eye on.
