Manchester United have reignited their interest in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, according to ManchesterWorld.
The website has revealed that the Red Devils have made a “tentative approach” for the Netherlands international, although it is still not clear whether Barca would be willing to sell.
It is believed that United would be prepared to pay between £30m and £40m for de Jong, who has been a target for manager Erik ten Hag since he arrived at Old Trafford two years ago.
However, up until now, neither the player nor his club have shown any real interest in doing a deal.
What is de Jong’s current situation?
The 27-year-old is sidelined with an ankle injury which forced him to miss the European Championships but it is believed he will be back in action at some point this month.
De Jong has less than two years left on his contract at the Camp Nou but, as he is earning a staggering €37.5m a year (which is £620,000 a week), the only way that deal will be extended is if he agrees to a pay cut.
United have cast their net wide in the search for midfielders
De Jong is by no means the only player that the Red Devils are looking at as they seek to reinforce their options in the middle of the park.
Reports suggest that talks are underway with Burnley to sign Sander Berge, while there is thought to be interest in Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana, Palmeiras’ Richard Rios, former loanee Sofyan Amrabat and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.
The club decided to cool their interest in Manuel Ugarte after Paris Saint-Germain stuck to their £60m asking price. A move for the Uruguayan international could be revived before the transfer window closes but only if PSG lower their demands.
