Manchester United are weighing up an approach for Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, according to The Athletic.
The website claims that the 27-year-old and Brentford’s Ivan Toney are on a list of targets that have been “discussed” by the club’s recruitment team.
Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford in past transfer windows but those rumours petered out due to the player’s ongoing injury problems.
The England international did stay fit for most of last season, though, having made 38 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees.
Calvert-Lewin’s asking price has already scared off other clubs
Newcastle entered negotiations to sign the striker last month. The Magpies were keen on recruiting him as a potential replacement for Callum Wilson.
However, Eddie Howe’s side quickly backed out of the move once they realised that Everton had slapped a £40m asking price on the player.
That’s an eyewatering sum considering Calvert-Lewin’s fitness issues and the fact that he scored just 8 times during the 2023/24 campaign. If United were to make a bid, you would expect them to offer a lot less than what Toffees are currently demanding.
United may prioritise other positions
Having already recruited Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna to strengthen the forward line, you’d think that the Red Devils would devote their remaining resources to strengthening other areas of the pitch.
More personnel are required in midfield and, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly asking for between £50m and £60m for Manuel Ugarte, the money could be better spent on the Uruguayan international.
Other positions that could be reinforced include right-back (to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka if he leaves), centre-back (with Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt still an option), and left-back (where support is required for the injury-prone Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia).
