South American Star Set For ‘Medical Next Week’ As United Close In On Transfer

Cerro Porteno left-back Diego Leon is poised to complete his move to Manchester United, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claim that the teenager will have his “medical next week” ahead of joining the Red Devils this summer.

Leon is believed to have already signed all the necessary paperwork, with United expected to pay $4m upfront for the youngster, as well as additional bonuses.

The teenager can only officially move to England when he turns 18 in April so he will stay in Paraguay until June.

United’s recruitment team pushed for the deal to go ahead

It is believed that the club’s lead scout in South America, Giuseppe Antonaccio, is the one who urged the club to make the move for Leon.

Following the recommendation, technical director Jason Wilcox was heavily involved in getting an agreement with both the defender and his club.

What do fans need to know about Leon?

The fullback does not have a great deal of experience at first-team level, having only made his senior debut for Cerro Porteno back at the start of August.

It was a memorable first appearance for Leon, though, as he scored the winner in a 1-0 victory over CS Ameliano. He subsequently made 18 more appearances for Cerro Porteno before Paraguay’s season ended in late November.

While the youngster is expected to gain more first-team experience with his current club before making the switch to Old Trafford, it’s unlikely that he will be part of Ruben Amorim’s plans straight away.

Leon is definitely one for the future, and he may spend some time in the youth setup before potentially being loaned out. Other Premier League clubs (such as Arsenal and Manchester City) were also after the player but United moved quickly to secure his signature.
