Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe says that United should sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck.
Welbeck is having one of his best seasons in the Premier League as he has scored six goals and two assists in 12 games and has three more goals than United’s best goal scorer this season, Alejandro Garnacho.
Welbeck spent a long spell of his career at United as he came through the academy and made over 140 appearances for the club scoring 29 goals and 17 assists.
He left in 2014 to join rivals Arsenal before a spell at Watford. He has been at Brighton since 2020 and has found a home in the Amex.
However, Lee Sharpe believes that United should sign the 34-year-old in January as a cheap, short-term solution to their lack of goals.
He told Racing Tipster: “Manchester United could look at someone like Danny Welbeck in January. I know he’s been at the club before, but he’s doing brilliant things at Brighton this season and looks a really assured and mature player at the moment.
“He’s working his socks off, creating and scoring goals, and he looks like he’s in his prime down there at the AMEX Stadium.
“That’s the type of striker I’m thinking of that is bright enough and strong enough to have a really good effect in the Premier League. I think Rasmus Højlund will come good eventually, but he’s still a bit raw and still needs a little but more composure, so the club probably need a bit of extra backup.”
Manchester United keen to add a striker in January
The Red Devils have been linked to several strikers in recent months with the biggest name being Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.
As Ruben Amorim used to manage him at the Portuguese club, it would be an obvious draw for the Swede who has scored 24 goals in 20 games in all competitions so far this season.
