United ‘Likely’ To Make January Bid For £30M Rated Midfield Maestro Who Is Also Wanted By Chelsea And Real Madrid

Manchester United are “likely” to table a formal offer for Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg during the January transfer window, according to the Northern Echo.

The local newspaper claims that the Red Devils see the 17-year-old as the “most appealing young domestic talent” available and they are prepared to test Sunderland’s resolve with a bid.

Rigg was originally targeted before he signed his first professional contract with the Black Cats back in July. However, even though the player is set to cost considerably more now, the interest has remained.

It has been reported that the teenager’s asking price could be as high as £30m, which would be a lot to pay for someone who has made just 40 senior appearances in his career to date.

Rigg is attracting a lot of interest

Chelsea, Wolves, Crystal Palace and even Real Madrid have been mentioned as the other clubs who are keeping close tabs on the midfielder.

However, the Northern Echo claim that Sunderland have every intention of knocking back all proposals for Rigg in January. Whether that stance will hold firm if they do receive substantial bids, though, it remains to be seen.

United will have limited funds in January

With the club having to be mindful of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, there have been suggestions that the Red Devils won’t be too active in the next transfer window.

If Rigg’s valuation is as high as reported, it may present a challenge for sporting director Dan Ashworth. One way around it would be to pay any transfer fee in instalments whilst also including sizeable add-ons, which would be paid out based on appearances and performances.

It does look like that, if United do go into the market for a new signing, Rigg will be near the top of the club’s list of targets.
