Manchester United have not made an enquiry for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
Reports in the French media had suggested that the Red Devils were interested in recruiting the 26-year-old but, speaking on the London Is Blue podcast, Jacobs said:
“Nkunku – you would expect to start games in the festive period or the second half of the season. I’m not aware that he’s asked to leave or he’s been put on the market, and it’s certainly not true to my understanding that Manchester United have made any kind of enquiry, contrary to some reports out there.”
The France international has had to play second fiddle to Nicolas Jackson in the Premier League and several journalists have indicated that the player isn’t happy with sitting on the bench. That is likely why United were linked with signing him, considering their problems finding the back of the net this season.
Nkunku has found life tough since arriving in England
The forward was very much in demand before Chelsea paid RB Leipzig £52m to win the race for his signature last year. However, his first season in English football was plagued by injuries and he has not managed to establish himself as a first-team regular since the Blues appointed Enzo Maresca as head coach in the summer.
While a transfer in January is deemed unlikely at this stage, there is a good chance that Nkunku will leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the campaign if his situation doesn’t improve.
Will United buy any players in January?
A lot will depend on new head coach Ruben Amorim. The 39-year-old will need time to assess his squad before making judgements about recruitment.
Unlike previous managers, though, he is not expected to get the final say on new signings with transfers now in the remit of sporting director Dan Ashworth.
