Manchester United have been made aware of Ben Chilwell’s availability, according to talkSPORT.
The radio station claims that Erik ten Hag’s side have been “offered the chance” to sign the England international before the transfer window closes next week.
Blues boss Enzo Maresca has confirmed Chilwell is one of 15 players who are training away from the first-team squad. The Italian says he has spoken to the fullback, as well as Raheem Sterling and others, to confirm that they do not feature in his plans:
“The only thing I can say is that I try to be honest with all of them in this moment, the noise is from outside More than 15 players are training apart, they are not with the team.”
“I spoke with Raheem [Sterling] before Manchester City, I said that he is going to struggle to get minutes with us. With Chilly [Chilwell] I said he is a lovely guy, but with his position, he’s going to struggle with us. It’s not brutal, it’s honest.”
United were linked with the player earlier this summer
It was reported back in July that the Red Devils were weighing up a move for the 27-year-old, with the club having issues keeping both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia fit.
Neither player was available for the opening-day win against Fulham, with Diogo Dalot having to provide cover on the left-hand side of defence.
Chilwell’s injury history raises alarm bells
Considering the problems that Shaw and Malacia have faced, it would be a surprise if United seriously considered buying or even loaning another left-back who has a questionable fitness record.
Since joining Chelsea in 2020, Chilwell has suffered an ACL injury and serious hamstring issues. Combined with his wage demands, there wouldn’t be many upsides to recruiting him.
