Manchester United Join Liverpool And Chelsea In Pursuit Of £75m Winger

Manchester United have reportedly joined the race for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon amid interest from Liverpool and Chelsea as the speed merchant continues to acquire admirers.

According to CaughtOffside, United are keen on signing Anthony Gordon but will have to stave off interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea.

The English international has impressed since moving to St James’ Park from Everton back in January 2023. He has made 64 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 13 goals and recording 11 assists.

Newcastle are aiming to keep hold of the 24 year-old but may struggle to deter him from a move to the likes of Liverpool and United. They have set a price tag of around £75 million – a large sum for a winger that is still yet to prove himself consistenly at the highest level.

Can Manchester United compete with Liverpool for Gordon’s signature?

The simple answer is, it will be tough. Gordon is a boyhood Liverpool fan and so his desire to play at Anfield is unquestionable. Reported in the Telegraph, Newcastle are concerned about the winger’s state of mind, reporting that his head could well be turned by the Reds.

However, Liverpool failed to match Newcastle’s asking price for Gordon and so if United were to swoop in with a handsome fee, then they could jump ahead of the Reds in the race for the 24 year-old.

How would Gordon fit in at Old Trafford?

United do have a lack of options on the flanks, especially pacey wingers like Gordon. With the future of Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood up in the air, Gordon could provide a replacement. Furthemore, Marcus Rashford’s form has detiriorated significantly, meaning the addition of a new pacey attacker could give Erik Ten Hag much more quality going forward.

United have reportedly shown serious interest in the midfield areas, but look to be focusing more on a Casemiro replacement with PSG’s Manuel Ugarte and Joao Neves as the biggest contenders.

Gordon is one of the first wingers that Ten Hag has shown interest in this summer, potentially highlighting his desire to add more attacking firepower before the season starts.
