United Consider Surprise Swoop For Ex-Chelsea Star Who Has Only Played 26 Minutes This Season

Manchester United are weighing up an approach for Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen, according to reports in Spain.

The former Chelsea player could soon leave the Camp Nou with Catalan publication Mundo Deportivo claiming that the Red Devils have shown “serious interest” ahead of the January transfer window.

Christensen has had his issues with injuries. His only appearance for Barca this season came on the opening day, playing the final 26 minutes of the 2-1 win over Valencia.

Since then, the Danish international has been sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury. He has had an operation to correct the issue and Mundo Deportivo report that he has begun training again.

United will have competition for the centre-half

Christensen has plenty of suitors in Italy with it being suggested that Juventus want him as a potential replacement for the injured Gleison Bremer.

Inter Milan have also been credited with an interest in the 28-year-old in recent months but a lot will depend on whether he is open to leaving Barcelona. The Dane still has 18 months left on his contract.

Christensen is not the only defender to be linked with a switch to Old Trafford

In addition to the ex-Chelsea star, United have been tipped to revive their interest in Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite. The England international was the subject of several bids from the Red Devils last summer. However, his £75m asking price made it a difficult deal to negotiate.

Christensen would, therefore, be the more economical choice, although it remains to be seen how high up the list of priorities a new centre-back is for the club’s recruitment team.

The lack of specialist wingbacks means that United may focus their attention on strengthening that position first before looking at reinforcing the middle of defence.
