Manchester United could get involved in a “big race” to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking to the United Stand YouTube channel, Romano said that the Red Devils, Arsenal and Barcelona are among the Belgian international’s main suitors:

“There’s nothing close or imminent but Onana, I would keep an eye [on]. Also, other clubs [in addition to United], because we have many rumours about him and there is interest, for example for a long time, from Arsenal, Barcelona so many clubs are looking at him, not just Manchester United.”

“I think it is going to be a big race in the summer for Onana. It’s a big opportunity. United could be there but, at the moment, they have not started any concrete talks or negotiations with the player’s camp.”

How much will Onana cost?

Back in January, when reports emerged about United’s interest in the Everton player, it was reported that the Toffees would demand as much as £60m for the 22-year-old.

It should be pointed out that Onana moved to Goodison Park from Lille for €35m in the summer of 2022 so Everton will expect to make a profit from his sale. His asking price could, though, be affected if they are relegated from the top flight.

United are looking at another Everton star

Fresh reports in the English media have linked Erik ten Hag’s side with a move for Onana’s teammate Jarrad Branthwaite, with it being claimed that the defender’s valuation is as high as £75m.

However, Romano has played down those stories, suggesting that Branthwaite is unlikely to be the Manchester club’s top target in the centre of defence.

The journalist has mentioned Benfica’s Antonio Silva as one potential alternative, but a lot still depends on who will be in charge of recruitment. INEOS have yet to agree compensation with Newcastle for Dan Ashworth and more concrete decisions will only be made once he takes up his post.
