Alan Shearer Makes “Unusual” Manchester United Admission After Ruben Amorim’s “Worst Team” Comments

Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer has said that Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim’s comments about his side being the worst United team were unusual.

Manchester United lost 3-1 to Brighton on Sunday afternoon in a game where they struggled to create enough chances to overcome a tricky Seagulls side, who were able to exploit United’s vulnerability in defence.

The Red Devils went 1-0 down after just five minutes following Yakuba Minteh’s opening goal. They then equalised through Bruno Fernandes, before Kaoru Mitoma netted Brighton’s second goal, and Georgino Rutter then made it 3-1.

It leaves United 13th in the Premier League table, 10 points above the relegation zone, sparking Ruben Amorim to say that his side is the worst Manchester United team in the club’s history following the Brighton defeat at Old Trafford.

They face a Europa League match against Rangers next time out, hoping to get back to winning ways at Old Trafford following their recent poor home form.

Shearer says Amorim’s ‘worst team’ comments are “unusual”

Shearer said on The Rest Is Football podcast, that although Amorim has a point, his comments were unusual. “I mean, you sort of get and understand why he’s probably saying that to buy himself time,” Shearer said, “because it’s so unusual that you’ve got one of, if not biggest football club in the world, and the managers coming out and saying, this is the worst side in their history.

“We were saying how well they performed at Arsenal and how well they performed at Liverpool, yet a week later, he’s coming out and saying they’re the worst in their history. It’s incredible.”

Shearer was quick to suggest that there isn’t too much pressure on Amorim as the club is in such a state that he will get a free pass until the end of the season.

He added: “He’s [Amorim] got a bit of a free pass because of how bad it’s been there, and because of how bad the recruitment has been, because of how bad the takeover has been, and because how bad everything is. They need massive recruitment now and in the summer, but it’s going to take a lot longer than that to get that club right.”
