Ian Wright Claims £36.5M Summer Signing May Struggle To Get Games Under Amorim

Arsenal legend Ian Wright says Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee may find life tough under Ruben Amorim.

The Dutchman was only signed from Bologna for £36.5m in the summer but Wright claims that the striker’s style of play may not be to the new head coach’s liking:

“I’m trying to think of Ruben Amorim coming in and who he’s going to play. Zirkzee will need to go through some massive transformation to play in the team ahead of other players. He’s definitely not a natural goalscorer. I’m still waiting to see it from him.”

Zirkzee has only scored once since moving to Old Trafford, and that goal came on the opening day of the season when he bagged the winner against Fulham.

Amorim’s system may lead to some surprise omissions from the starting lineup

If the 39-year-old does stick with the 3-4-3 formation he used regularly at Sporting, certain players may not get a lot of football.

Only two central midfielders will be needed and Manuel Ugarte (who worked with Amorim in Portugal) is likely to take one of the spots. Where does that leave Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and even captain Bruno Fernandes?

Amorim generally favours a target man up front so Rasmus Hojlund would probably take the role. Considering Zirkzee’s preference is to play as a false nine, he may not be used that regularly in his best position.

When will Amorim start his job at United?

After reaching a compromise with Sporting, the Reds Devils shortened the Portuguese coach’s 30-day notice period so he can begin work on November 11th.

Amorim’s last match in charge of his current club will be an away fixture against Braga (another one of his former teams) on Sunday evening.
