Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson does not think Manchester United star Casemiro will start against Ipswich Town this weekend.
The game at Portman Road will be Ruben Amorim’s first in charge of the Red Devils and, speaking to Paddy Power, Lawrenson said that Casemiro’s inability to press will see him “drop” to the bench:
“You’d look at Casemiro and think that if they’re going to press and get up the field quickly, that won’t be his ideal way of playing and I think he might struggle.”
“He has played better of late, but they’ve got a new manager, and he might decide to drop him because he doesn’t have the legs.”
The United star has played better this season
The Brazilian international had a strong start to his United career following his £70m move from Real Madrid in 2022. He played a key role as Erik ten Hag secured a 3rd place finish and the League Cup in his first year in charge.
Casemiro’s form did drop alarmingly last season, leading many to question whether the midfielder could still play at the highest level but, as Lawrenson mentions, he has been one of the better performers, despite the club’s struggles, since the new campaign began back in August.
A change of formation may not aid Casemiro’s selection chances
In addition to his ageing legs, another factor that may cost the 32-year-old his place in the starting lineup is Amorim’s favoured formation.
The 3-4-3 system only has room for two central midfielders, and many believe the new head coach will favour Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.
Ugarte played for Amorim at Sporting Lisbon for two years and he has already expressed his admiration for the Uruguayan international since his appointment at Old Trafford. Mainoo, meanwhile, offers a lot more than Casemiro in possession. It will be interesting to see who makes the eleven on Sunday afternoon.
